Beschreibung
The route starts at Ziegelbrücke railroad station, an important junction station on the Zurich-Chur line. Most of the village, which is divided by the Linth Canal, lies in the canton of Glarus. The Jenny site dominates here: during the heyday of the textile industry, the Fritz + Caspar Jenny company employed over 800 people here. In 2020 the weaving mill was closed. The site with apartments and commercial premises is now listed in the inventory of sites of national importance worthy of protection. The northern part of Ziegelbrücke with only around 50 inhabitants belongs to the canton of St. Gallen. The obstacle-free hike towards Weesen also runs here.
After a short section on the main road, you reach the banks of the Linth. The trail then runs between the Linth and the wooded Biberlichopf, a popular vantage point. During archaeological excavations, a watchtower was discovered here alongside weapons and pottery. This was probably part of a Roman security system and was built in the early 1st century during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The view then opens up: Surrounded by lush green meadows and imposing mountains, the path leads upstream along the Linth Canal towards Weesen. In summer, you are likely to meet people on the water here, as this section is popular for rubber dinghies or canoes. These start in Weesen, which is also known as the Riviera on Lake Walensee and lies directly on its shores.
Thanks to its sheltered location, Weesen enjoys an exceptionally mild climate. Palm trees, fig and lemon trees and even kiwis thrive here. With many hours of sunshine, Weesen can even grow its own wine. Benches along the lakeside promenade invite you to linger and enjoy. The area is a popular excursion destination for tourists and nature lovers who want to experience the beauty of the Alps and Lake Walensee. In Weesen, the route leads from the harbor to the Weesen See bus stop, where it ends. If you still have some time: Close by is the Weesen Museum and Gallery, where you can learn more about the history of the region.
