Beschreibung
Medieval Town with a Fascinating History
Weesen used to be a Rhaetian settlement in pre-Christian times. Later it became a permanent Roman settlement, and then turned Alemannic and Cyburgian in the Middle Ages. After 1283, it was possessed by the Habsburgs and became an important customs and transshipment point. In 1388, the Confederate garrison was killed in the historically significant night of murder in the small town of Weesen. After the Battle of Näfels, the town finally burned down.
Until 1798, Weesen was under the rule of Schwyz and Glarus. With the opening of the Zurich-Uster-Weesen-Sargans railroad line in 1859, Weesen began to flourish as a tourist destination.
The Schwert parc hotel is the oldest hotel restaurant on Lake Walensee – first mentioned at the end of the 14th century.
Recreation on Lake Walensee
With its impressive history, Weesen is today a charming little town with tranquil alleyways, cosy restaurants and cafés and various shopping opportunities. The idyllic location between the lake and the mountain makes Weesen a first-class place for a relaxing vacation.
