Amden
The village of Amden is situated high above Lake Walensee and is widely known as the sun terrace of the region. Amden lies at around 900 metres above sea level and offers a unique home to around 1200 people. The fantastic views and unrivalled location make the village in the southern canton of St. Gallen a real gem.
The village of Amden towers high above Lake Walensee. The entire municipality of Amden stretches from Lake Walensee at 419 metres above sea level up to the summit of Leistchamm at 2101 metres above sea level and almost as far as the Toggenburg valley floor. The village centre itself lies at 900 m.a.s.l. The "Ammler Mulde" opens up to the south and is in an often-times fog-free location. This fortunate circumstance makes Amden a marvellous sun terrace in the truest sense of the word. Extensive natural landscapes, nature reserves and conservation areas and important natural objects are a great wealth. The extensive Alps and woodlands, interspersed with diverse flora and fauna, are vital rest and recreation areas for people and animals and are not to be underestimated as regeneration areas for air and water. Amden is also one of the few municipalities with two moorlands of particular beauty and national importance.
In the winter months, the Arvenbüel district is particularly well known for its family-friendly ski area and spectacular views. A chairlift and ski lift run from the village up towards Mattstock. In the summer months, the natural arena around Amden is a popular and varied hiking area.
