Are the rapids in Ziegelbrücke dangerous? 

  • The rapids do require special attention. Stay in the centre of the canal inbetween the two labelled signs. 
  • Do not tie boats together, as it otherwise hampers steering. 
  • If you are unsure, we recommend that you either enter the water after the rapids or go around it by foot.

Does my boat have to be labelled?

  • All boats have to be labelled with the name and address of its owner. 
  • It is also recommended to add your phone number. 

How long is the trip from Weesen to Schmerikon? 

  • Without paddling you are on the boat for approximately 4 to 5 hours. 
  • The Linth Canal is around 17 kilometres long from Weesen to its confluence with the Obersee.

Where can I dispose my rubbish?

  • You can find rubbish bins at all official entry and exit points. 
  • Please respect nature reserves and other protected areas.
  • Please take your boat back home with you.

Do I have to wear a life jacket?

  • It is highly recommended to wear a life jacket.
  • It is compulsory to carry one life-saving appliance per person.

Am I allowed to steer a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs? 

  • The legal requirement foresees, that only people who are fit to drive may steer a boat. 
  • There is no drink-drive limit. Nevertheless, it must be ensured that the people on board are fit to drive. This requirement applies to rubber boats and non-motorised vessels, which do not have to be registered.
  • Alcohol consumption should be postponed until after the boat trip
  • Drug consumption is generally not permitted.

How warm resp. cold is the water of the Linth Canal? 

  • The current water temperatures can be found on BAFU.
  • The water in rivers is significantly cooler than in lakes. It is important to remember that jumping into cold water can sometimes lead to life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia. Therefore, never jump into the water overheated!
  • The body should be given time to get used to the temperature difference.
